Millions of rail users in the UK face travel chaos today as the first of three national rail strikes across England, Scotland and Wales begin.
Two more walk-outs are planned this week, on Thursday and Saturday, with more strike dates expected later this month and in July.
The action by members of the RMT union over pay and redundancies, means only a fifth of trains are due to run on half of the network. Many areas will have no train service at all – including everywhere north of Glasgow and Edinburgh.
There’s further misery for London commuters with London Underground workers also going on strike in a separate dispute over pensions and job losses.
The advice to everyone is avoid all but essential travel on strike days as Network Rail's boss says he is "profoundly sorry" for the disruption to people's journeys.
